Survey: Chicago Businesses Must Optimize Their Websites for Mobile Devices (or Lose Customers)

The economic recovery is a slow one. People are still worrying about losing their jobs. Millions of homeowners owe more on their mortgage than their residences are worth. Credit-card debt continues to weigh down U.S. households. These are definitely challenging times for consumers. As a small business owner, you don’t want to let them have more reasons to not purchase your products or services. Sad to say, many businesses are doing just that when it comes to their websites. They’re operating sites that do not work well on mobile devices including tablets and smartphones. As increasing numbers of consumers use their mobile devices to search for local info (according to Google, 1 in 3 searches are local) local businesses are still running archaic sites that look like crap (let’s be honest) on smartphones and tablets.

Are you chasing away customers?

At first blush, this may seem like a small problem. It’s not, unfortunately. As the folks at MarketingVOX recently pointed out, there are very real financial penalties for having a mobile-unfriendly website. As increasingly more consumers use mobile devices to access the web, the penalties are getting stronger. In a recent post, MarketingVOX highlighted research from Google showing that:

  • 2/3 of consumers say that they’re more likely to buy products and services from a mobile-friendly site.
  • 61 percent of consumers say that they’ll quickly leave a mobile site if they can’t find the info they need immediately.

The Google survey also discovered that 96 percent of consumers say they’ve found websites that were not designed for mobile devices. And half of consumers said that even if they like a business, they’ll buy from it less frequently if the business’s website is not mobile-friendly. And on the plus side? A full 74 percent say that they’re more likely to return to a mobile-friendly website.

Your challenge

What does this mean for the business owner? Only that maintaining a mobile-friendly website is critical and getting more so. Look around you: You will notice a steady stream of consumers surfing the web on phones, iPads, Nooks, and Kindles. And this is a movement that’s not slowing. Tablets remain hot sellers, and an increasing number of consumers do much of their web surfing and social media activities through mobile devices. According to a joint Google/Ipsos study, after consumers look up a business via mobile, 61% say they make a phone call and 59% say they visit the business! The message is clear: If you make a bad impression, if your business’s site looks cramped, cluttered, or illegible when viewed on a tablet or smartphone, you have the very risk of driving potential customers to your competitors!
